Key Techniques for your Decision Making Toolbox 

Here are our Key Techniques for your Decision Making Toolbox that you can then practice using to improve not just your speed, but your accuracy, in making decisions.

  • Decision MakingRealize Pro Decision Making skills take practice.  Be Patient with yourself and don’t start with your biggest decision.
  • Build up your decision making muscle by practicing on Small stuff and building Momentum. Don’t attempt to tackle your most pressing or difficult problems. Start with easy ones. As you do, you’ll discover that most of the perceived problems are all easy.
  • Always Be Focused and Present. Do NOT make a decision when your mind is not clear and focused ONLY on the decision. Essentially, do NOT multi-task. Don’t have the TV on at the same time you’re looking to decide something important. Be focused. Take a breath, make sure you’re awareness is ONLY on the task at hand and then go.
  • Why “Assessing” is almost always “Over-Thinking”
    • Here’s a little secret: You Always know the Answer if you’ve done proper analysis or research. If you’ve arrived at a “choice” of options, then you have all of the answers. Anything you do AFTER you’ve reached this stage is Over-Thinking. Stop crossing over this point of moving from “reaching” a decision to over-thinking.
      • Key: If you don’t have an Option or Answer (at least 1), you’re not ready for a Decision. Do more research or Analysis until you do.
  • Learn to TRUST YOUR GUT
    • Another way to describe this is The First Thought that comes to mind. Learn to make Decisions based on the first thought that comes to your mind. Not the second or the third. I have found that many times when I over-analyzed or over-thought a decision or questioned myself, that I had ignored my initial thought and chose a later option, those tended to always be wrong. So, try it out and trust your gut.
      • Practice this on smaller decisions and track your accuracy.
  • Learn HOW you process information: Visual, Auditory, or Kinesthetic
    • Visual: If you are this type, write out your Decision quickly (in an email or even on paper.) The key is you need to SEE your decision. Re-read once and then make your decision, putting it into action.
    • Auditory: If you are this type, speak OUT LOUD what you think the decision is. Once you have spoken or read your decision out loud, then make your decision, putting it into action.
    • Kinesthetic: If you are this type, rub your hands together until warm, touch your face and then write or state decision. Then make your decision, putting it into action.
      • NOTE: because these types process Slower, you get 2 minutes or less, instead of 1 minute, to make your Decisions!!
    • TIP: You can take a simple test online to determine which type you are. Follow this link:
  • decision_making_processNEVER postpone or Procrastinate on a Decision. Take action immediately. Remember, No Decision is a Decision. There is NO neutral in reality.
    • Key: As mentioned earlier, you have to ARRIVE at the Decision point. This means you have at least 1 Option. As long as you do, then this principle to Never Postpone applies. As said before, if you don’t have a Choice, then you more than likely aren’t ready to make a Decision. Make sense?
  • NEVER respond to something that PISSED you off. Wait a MINIMUM of 1 Hour.  Make sure you’ve Changed your state when you DO respond. Learning to change your State is another training course altogether but the easiest way to explain how to change your State is a simple exercise.
    • Turn on your Favorite upbeat music, get out of your chair and jump around to the beat for 2 minutes. Or, do 25 jumping jacks in place. That quick burst of exercise will throttle your body with blood and oxygen and you’ll change your state.
  • It’s useful and empowering to ask your Team or Staff what they think in the RESEARCH Phase ONLY. Doesn’t mean you will go with their suggestions or opinions but including them gives you insight and provides them a feeling of Belonging. And, it Builds rapport.
  • NEVER let your Ego get in your way.  It will cloud judgement.
  • NEVER let Approval or Fear of “them” NOT liking you get in the way. It clouds judgement.
  • Over-Thinking and Over-Analyzing lead to Stress.
  • Indecision leads to Stress and Overwhelm
  • FINALLY– always think of the DESIRED outcome. And , if possible, PROJECT IN A FLASH into the Future to see if you like the decision.
    • Super Tip: Ask yourself: What do I WANT the decision and outcome to be? If I could have my way, fast forward to when the decision resulted in completion, would I be Satisfied?
      • A similar way to explain this technique would be to think of your choices as side A or side B of a coin. So, once you assign a side for each option, ASK YOURSELF, if I really flipped a coin right now, which side would I WANT to come up?
      • I’ve found both these simple Questions can hone your decision making process.
